Toward the end of this season they completely tear that apart, especially in the last three episodes. One of the things I particularly liked about the first season was the family bond between the brothers. This is the weakest of the three seasons, with the writing reaching farther and farther afield to try to bring in interesting elements of mythology to keep us entertained, and turning their human lives into a soap opera. suit and tie), but rather what we'd think of as a "costume party." And that was actually one of my biggest issues with the show: Axl (in fact nearly everyone) gets into a staggering variety of costumes across three seasons: at least one dress a season for Axl, his underwear on multiple occasions, butt naked fairly frequently, and on one memorable occasion, a merkin. And that a "fancy dress party" doesn't mean what we think (ie. And that "having a root" means to have sex. And it can also be applied to any piece of equipment ("this car is munted"). I now know that "munted" means not merely drunk, but so drunk (or messed up) as to not be functional.
and a good deal more trouble with their expressions. I had considerably less trouble with the New Zealand version of English than I expected. My favourite episodes all involved Thor: he appears in one episode in each season(?), and Geoff Dolan does a wonderful job of their vision of an overweight goat farmer with a temper as Thor. So we've already had two seasons of the brothers trying to track her down. if the reincarnation of Odin is united with the reincarnation of Frigg.

And this was a big moment for his brothers, because they're all minor gods and the appearance of Odin could potentially mean that they'll all regain their full powers.
At which point he discovered that he was a reincarnated Norse God - with very limited powers. The short version is this: when Axl Johnson turned 21 (at the beginning of Season 1), his brothers took him out into the woods, gave him a sword, and lightning hit him. It deserves it, and more.See also my reviews of Season 1 or Season 2. They all have totally unique personalities and goals, and while they're totally badass, they have real traits other than that.Īlthough this show isn't widely known, I hope that it gains a bigger following thanks to it being shown on SyFy. The female characters are my favorites, because they're some of the best written and developed ones I've found. It seems simple, but there are several twists that keep you entertained and invested. This will cause the other reincarnations of the gods/goddesses to gain their full powers. The ongoing plot is the quest to find the Frigg so that she and Odin (Axl) may be reunited. Out of the four brothers, Anders' arc is the most intriguing to me and his development is definitely the most prominent (especially due to events in the third season that cause him to develop PTSD, which is portrayed realistically). I found myself relating to the characters' unique personalities, and while I found myself disliking one of the main characters (Mike, although you can hardly blame me), I was still totally invested in the character development arcs.
It's a great show-the characters are fantastic, funny, and well-written (especially the female characters), and the storyline is well thought-out and not too complicated or simple. It's not popular or widely known outside of New Zealand, but I sincerely hope that it being shown on SyFy gains it a bigger audience.

I marathoned through all three seasons and came to the conclusion that this was definitely my new favorite tv show. I first saw The Almighty Johnsons last year and almost instantly fell in love with the characters and storyline.
